Sign [Manuscript] is an installation designed in response to a brief from Art Campus, producer of works of contemporary art distributed within the network of French university campuses, and bearing a relation to the campus' heritage and architecture.
On an external wall of a campus building there appears a line of green light, thrown by a laser. It writes letters, a word, sometimes a short phrase. It writes without stopping, in a hesitant, 'handwritten' stroke. Sometimes it is rubbed out, or crosses itself out. It finishes some words, but not all.
The words that hesitantly appear are borrowed from and intended to represent the vocabulary specific to the fields of research and training, as well as life in general on the campus concerned.
Day and night, the words try to form as if written by an invisible hand. The fragile movements of this 'manuscript' seem to echo man's own will to learn, investigate, progress. Alternatively timid and confident, the writing captures the audience's attention by its codes and linguistic territory.¬ It also questions the fundamental influences and motivations behind research and learning: Who made this? Why? How? Who do the words belong to? Who is seeking them out?
